My son and his friend (and many others) have been given conflicting information in response to every tender-heart’s age old question: Do animals go to Heaven?
When we set out on this quest for truth and clarification on a whole host of subjects, I reserved this particular question for last. Not because I didn’t know the best response, but because other fundamentals concerned me far more than the fate of Bob the Cat’s soul. But Bob the Cat’s soul was the most misunderstood topic of all. (And I didn’t know the best response.)
All Dogs Go to Heaven is not just a movie, a book, a feel-good concept, or even grounds for sound theological debate. I have searched, researched, asked, and read every scripture I can find relating to God’s creatures, their creation, protection, dominion, and finally- their end.
How did “animals have no souls” ever make into Christian doctrine to begin with?
Well… remember, not all doctrine is truth.
~ Woe to you experts in (religious) law, because you have taken away the key to knowledge. You yourselves have not entered, and you have hindered those who were entering. ~ Luke 11:52
This is why it is important to never accept regurgitated teaching from anyone. EVER. God already wrote it. He sealed it. He delivered it. He wants, and expects, us to READ it.
Okay… Very first line, directly from the Word: ~ In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. ~ Genesis 1:1
~ Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures after their kind: cattle and creeping things and beasts of the earth after their kind”; and it was so. God made the beasts of the earth after their kind, and the cattle after their kind, and everything that creeps on the ground after its kind; and God saw that it was good…~ Genesis 1:24,25
Throughout the Old Testament, there are scriptural mentions of animals WITH man, WITH their Creator, ON earth and IN Heaven.
~ The LORD is good to all, And His mercies are over all His works. All Your works shall give thanks to You, O LORD, And Your godly ones shall bless You. ~ Psalm 145:9,10
~ You open your hand and satisfy the desires of every living thing. ~ Psalm 145:16
~ My mouth will speak in praise of the LORD. Let every creature praise his holy name for ever and ever. ~ Psalm 145:21
~ Let everything that has breath praise the LORD. Praise the LORD! ~ Psalm 150:6
And the wolf will dwell with the lamb, And the leopard will lie down with the young goat, and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; And a little boy will lead them. Also the cow and the bear will graze, Their young will lie down together, And the lion will eat straw like the ox.… ~ Isaiah 11:6,7
~ Then the glory of the LORD will be revealed, And all flesh will see it together; For the mouth of the LORD has spoken. ~ Isaiah 40:5
~ In that day I will also make a covenant for them with the beasts of the field, the birds of the sky and the creeping things of the ground. And I will abolish the bow, the sword and war from the land, And will make them lie down in safety. ~ Hosea 2:18
Remember, we are to accept God’s Word as divine, whole, and most importantly, complete- as HIS Final Authority on ALL matters:
~ Every word of God is tested; He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him. Do not add to His words, or He will reprove you, and you will be proved a liar…~ Proverbs 30:5,6
Into the New Testament, the same theme continues. God created ALL. God gave life and breath. God maintains dominion over man. Man maintains earthly dominion over creatures. But God, and now His Son, Jesus, maintains ultimate control over every one and everything in or out of Heaven.
~ For in Him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. ~ Colossians 1:16
God is not in the business of making anything disposable, invaluable, or lifeless.
~ See now that I alone am He; there is no God but Me. I bring death and I give life; I wound and I heal. No one can rescue anyone from My hand. ~ Deuteronomy 32:39
~ God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwells not in temples made with hands; Neither is He worshiped with men’s hands, as though He needed any thing, seeing He created all life, and gives breath, and all things… ~ Acts 17:24,25
~ And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.~ Luke 3:6, ESV
~ Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in them, saying: “To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and honor and glory and power, for ever and ever! ~ Revelation 5:13
Right up until the very last (as at the very beginning), God is sovereign.
Man will not, and cannot, have knowledge of things higher than he- we simply cannot fathom the peace, beauty, and enormity of God’s love- until the day that Jesus Himself returns to reign over His (our) Father’s Kingdom. Into which, incidentally, Christ will arrive on horseback.
~ I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True. ~ Revelation 19:11
We are given God’s Word, in its entirety, for study and life instruction, with specific direction to neither add nor remove any part of it. His Word is complete, and will not change.
~Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.~ Hebrews 13:8
~ “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.” ~ Revelation 1:8
He repeats: ~Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches.~
~ I testify to everyone who hears the prophetic words of this book: If anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues that are written in this book. And if anyone takes away from the words of this prophetic book, God will take away his share of the tree of life and the holy city, written in this book. ~ Revelation 22:18,19
Animals are included and referred to in both the Old and New Testaments. While there is no direct mention of animals having souls, there is also a glaring absence of any evidence that they do not.
Several scriptures do declare the existence of animals inside Heaven. Given that there are no occupants of Heaven without souls (except as angels that have never been mortal), and no mention of God creating animals anywhere other than earth, how else could an animal exist in Heaven but to have lived on earth?
We know Bob the Cat lived on earth, and Bob the Cat was definitely mortal. I would rather err on the side of scripture, than on denominational assumptions not backed by The Word.
~Surely the fate of human beings
is like that of the animals;
As one dies, so dies the other.
All have the same breath;
humans have no advantage over animals.~
Love your animals. You are far more likely to see them in Heaven than not.
Be blessed, Y’all!
